This book is about the 'triple jeopardy' facing the Western world, and particularly Britain, of aggressive secularism, radical Islamism and doctrines of multiculturalism and other 'isms' to which the author first drew our attention many years ago. Here he analyses how Western societies were formed and the challenges which they have faced over the course of history and more recently. He discusses here the question of fundamental rights and their basis in the Judeo-Christian tradition, equality as a spiritual idea and the origins of thinking about liberty. In the light of this, he addresses urgent bio-ethical concerns at both ends of the life-span, as well as moral conduct in the world of business and politics. The analysis leads him to suggest solutions which arise from the moral and spiritual tradition which he represents.

Author description

Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali holds Pakistani as well as British citizenship and he was the first non-white diocesan bishop in the Church of England. He has studied, researched and taught at a number of colleges and universities, including Karachi, Cambridge and Oxford. Before becoming Bishop of Rochester, he worked as a priest and as a bishop in Pakistan, and was General Secretary of the Church Mission Society. He is now the director of the Oxford Centre for Training, Research, Advocacy and Dialogue.
