Description

She kissed and kissed her with a hungry mouth.

The pioneering nineteenth-century poet's best-known and most darkly imaginative verses on love, death and loss. This volume contains a selection of Rossetti's most famous poems, from the hallucinatory 'Goblin Market' to 'In the bleak mid-winter.'

Introducing Little Black Classics: 80 books for Penguin's 80th birthday. Little Black Classics celebrate the huge range and diversity of Penguin Classics, with books from around the world and across many centuries. They take us from a balloon ride over Victorian London to a garden of blossom in Japan, from Tierra del Fuego to 16th century California and the Russian steppe. Here are stories lyrical and savage; poems epic and intimate; essays satirical and inspirational; and ideas that have shaped the lives of millions.

Author description

Christina Rossetti (1830-1894). Rossetti is unique among Victorian poets for the sheer range of her subject matter and the variety of her verse form. Rossetti's poems weave connections between love and death, triumph and loss, heavenly joys and earthly pleasures. The directness and clarity of her lyrics still have the power to startle us with their truth and beauty. Rossetti's The Complete Poems is available in Penguin Classics.
