It is a windy day on Sodor, perfect weather for the Kite Festival. All of the engines are excited, but Thomas is most excited of all. At the docks, workmen puts a trophy in a crate. The Fat Controller says that Lady Hatt will present the trophy to the Kite Festival winner at tea time. At Gordon's Hill, Thomas spots a beautiful kite, belonging to Stephen and Bridget Hatt. Suddenly, a gust of wind blows the kite out of their hands. Thomas promises that he will get it back to them, but forgets that he should deliver the trophy to Knapford. Charlie offers to help look for the kite, but Thomas says that he is the fastest engine, so he can do it himself. Later, he meets Edward, Percy, and Emily, who also want to help, but Thomas does not want their help either.
